Scope and Content

Correspondence of Prince Clemens von Metternich of Austria. Many of the letters dated between 1827 and 1828 were written by various European princes and princesses to congratulate Prince Metternich on his marriage to Maria Antonia von Leykem, the Princess von Beilstein. Many of the letters dated 1829 were sent to Metternich to congratulate him on the birth of his son Richard Clemens Joseph Lothar Herman. Signatories include various European monarchs such as Prince Ernst Friedrich von Loewenstein, Prince August von Minden, Prince Leopold I von Lippe, Prince von Hohenzollern, Prince Carl August von Hohenlohe, and Prince von Liechtenstein.

Biography of Clemens (or Klemens) von Metternich

Prince Clemens von Metternich was born in 1773 in Koblenz, Germany. The son of a count of the Holy Roman Empire and a countess of Austria, Metternich became an influential Austrian politician and diplomat. His legacy is two-fold. He was seen by many of his contemporaries as a foe of freedom, but has come to be recognized in the 20th century as skilled diplomat, who was able to maintain peace throughout Europe during the 19th century.

Statement of Arrangement

The collection was donated in a series of installments. The first installment is arranged in folders 1-5, the second installment in folder 6 and the third in folders 7 and 8. Most of the letters were provided with item numbers based on the date of their receipt, and are arranged in that order.
