History of Independent Voters of Ohio

The Independent Voters of Ohio was founded in 1968 as an independent political action group. The organizers of the I.V.O. had been members of the Eugene McCarthy campaign. In January of 1969, the group voted in a permanent constitution, established a board of directors and established several committees. According to its constitution, the objective of the group was to promote the general welfare by participating in local, state, and national political action to support liberal candidates and issues. In 1969, the I.V.O. was a local political action group with about 150 members. In November of 1971, the I.V.O. began its merger with the national Americans for Democratic Action group.
