John Fleischman papers
Scope and Content
This is a collection of books and papers of John Fleischman, a writer for The American Society of Cell Biology and various maganizines including Discover. The collection contains his own personal notes on Troy, as well as various books related to Troy and other ancient Greek topics. The collection also includes both printed photographs and color slides. Fleischman's handwritten notes from his trip to Troy; his notes from an interview with Ernst Schliemann; and drafts of his various publishings, including "The Funeral Banquet of King Midas," "A Touch of Midas," and "Midas" are also included in the collection.

Biography of John Fleischman
John Fleischman is an accomplished writer. He wrote articles about ancient Greece for Smithsonian and Discover magazines and also wrote the the novel Phineas Gage: A Gruesome But True Story About Brain Science which was an American Library Association's "Notable Children's Book" and "Best Book for Young Adults" in 2003. Fleischman attended Nottingham University and Antioch College for his BA in English Literature. He worked for Ohio Magazine for 16 years as a senior writer and then Senior Editor, Yankee Magazine for three years, and has been self-employed as a freelance writer since 1978. He also works for the American Society for Cell Biology (2001-present) as a translator of cell science into English and writing the ASCB Post on their website.
In addition to children's books, Fleischman has conducted research on archaeology. He wrote the articles "Homer's Bones," The Funeral Banquet of King Midas," and "A Touch of Midas" for Discover magazine. He also wrote an article on King Midas for Muse magazine. Other notable magazines that Fleischman wrote for include Archaeology, Preservation, and The Ohio Lands.
Fleischman is a member of many groups and associations. He is a member of ABSW, the National Association of Science Writers, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the American Society for Cell Biology. He has also earned several honors and awards including Fellow of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, 2006; Science Writers' Program, Marine Biological Laboratory, 1997; Macy Fellowship in Broadcast Journalism, WGBH (PBS) Boston, MA, 1985; and Alicia Patterson Foundation Fellow, 1977-78.
