History of the Dry Dredgers
The Dry Dredgers is an association of amateur geologists. The organization was formed in n April of 1942 with Dr. Kenneth Caster of the University of Cincinnati's Geology department serving as an advisor. The organization brings together people of all ages and backgrounds to share their love of fossil hunting. The first president of the group was Ed Lohmeyer and the only professional paleontologist to serve as president of the Dry Dredgers was John Pope who had a PhD from the University of Cincinnati. Members of the group have been recognized for their contributions to geology. Bill White received the Strimple Award from the Paleontological Society in 1985 in recognition of the significant contributions he made to the advancement of paleontology by aiding student research. In 1996, Steve Felton was awarded the Katherine Palmer Award by the Paleontological Research Institution and also the Strimple award by the Paleontological Society in recognition of outstanding contributions to the science of paleontology by a nonprofessional The Dry Dredgers has sponsored an annual Cincinnati Gem, Mineral, Fossil, and Jewelry Show, provided lectures and exhibits to local schools and libraries, and coordinated 6 or 7 field trips each year for members.
