Scope and Content
The folders in the Nelson and Florence Hoffmann Cincinnati Postcard Collection document the myriad research Nelson Hoffman conducted throughout his life. They encompass everything from Cincinnati businesses, towns, and architecture to church histories and local biographies. Along with corresponding research, most folders contain a brief newspaper article written by Nelson on the headlined topic.
The binders in the collection contain over 1,600 postcards aquired by Nelson Hoffmann over several decades, documenting Cincinnati's history and culture from the late 1800s through the late 1900s. All of the postcards in each binder have been individually cataloged according to their descriptive title, date, manufacturer's number, ARB catalog number, and binder/box number. Statement of Arrangement
The folders in the Nelson and Florence Hoffmann Cincinnati Postcard Collection are arranged alphabetically by topic, with A-K in Box 1, L-R in Box 2, and S-Z in Box 3. Sometimes the folder title does not start with the letter by which it is alphabetized, i.e. "A Devastating Flood" is alphabetized under F for "Flood," the main topic. Some folder dates refer to the dates covered under Nelson Hoffman's research and others refer to the actual date Hoffmann was doing research. In either context, researchers can find information about the headlined item within the dates provided. The binders in the collection have been catalogd according to Hoffmann's original organizational scheme. His original headings have been used unless otherwise noted.
