Biographical Note on Gilbert Bettman Jr.
Gilbert Bettman, Jr. was a judge on the Hamilton County Municipal Court, the Hamilton County Common Pleas Court and the Ohio First District Court of Appeals. Bettman's father Gilbert Bettman Sr. was a justice on the Ohio Supreme Court and Ohio Attorney General.
Gilbert Bettman Jr. graduated from Walnut Hills High School in Cincinnati and then attended Harvard University, where he received a bachelor's degree in 1938 and a law degree in 1942. He entered the Army as a private in 1942 and served in World War II. He received a bronze star for valor in 1944.
After World War II, Bettman practiced law in Cincinnati. In 1946, he married Elisabeth Robb Evers, a faculty member at Barnard College. He later married Marianna Brown, a lawyer and professor of law at the University of Cincinnati. Gilbert Bettman, Jr. was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives and then to the Hamilton County Municipal Court in 1956. Bettman also served on the Hamilton County Common Pleas Court and the Ohio First District Court of Appeals. He retired in 1992 at age 75, but continued to remain active as a mediator until his death.
