Biography of Arnold Schrier
Arnold Schrier (1925-2016) was a University of Cincinnati faculty member and historian. He received his Ph.D from Northwestern University in 1956. Schrier served as a Naval Officer during World War II and studied Japanese at the Naval Oriental Language School in Stillwater, Texas.
In 1956, Schrier was appointed as an Assistant Professor of History at the University of Cincinnati, and became a full professor in 1966. In 1972, Schrier was appointed Walter C. Langsam professor of Modern European History. He taught Russian History, World History, and Modern European History.
Schrier's publications include Ireland and the American Emigration, 1850-1900 (1958), Living World History (1969), and History and Life: The World and Its People. He was one of the joint editors of The Development of Civilization: A Documentary History of Politics, Society, and Thought (1961-1962), and Irish immigrants in the land of Canaan : letters and memoirs from colonial and revolutionary America, 1675-1815 (2003). He was also the editor of Modern European Civilization: A Documentary History of Politics, Society, and Thought from the Renaissance to the Present (1963).
Schrier received many awards throughout his career including a Distinguished Service Award from the Ohio Academy of History (1992) and a fellowship from the American Council of Learned Societies. Schrier was also active in many professional organizations including the Ohio Academy of History, the Midwest Slavic Conference, and the World History Association. Schrier retired from the University of Cincinnati in 1995 and passed away in 2016.
