History of American Civil Liberties Union. Cincinnati Chapter

The Cincinnati Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union began in Cincinnati in 1950 with James Paradise as its primary founding member and first president. The chapter began small, but in the late 1950s it had 250 members. In 1960, the chapter open its first office in Cincinnati and hired its first full-time worker, Marjorie Wright.

One of the chapter's first battles was against The Cincinnati Enquirer, which published a list of people suspected of "subversive" activities in May of 1950. The group continued working through the 1950s and 1960s with cases such as the censorship of the book Lolita, integrating Coney Island, and assisting individuals fired from their jobs under the Industrial Security Act.
