Scope and Content

The James Helmsworth collection occupies 1 linear foot and consists of 1 box containing 39 folders and one oversized model sailboat, which is stored separately. The collection is broken down in 3 series: Personal Memorabilia, Audio-visual Aides, and Realia. The collection includes a scrapbook of photographs from Japan as well as a set of photographs from Korea, which are from Helmsworth's militrary assignments following World War II. There are also articles that document Helmsworth's career and retirement.

Biography of James Helmsworth

Dr. Helmsworth graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School on 1939 and served a 2 year internship at the University Hospital of Philadelphia, followed by a residency here at the University of Cincinnati. In World War II, he joined the army and requested overseas duty. He served 32 months of overseas duty. In the military, he was assigned to 86th Field Hospital and after training landed on Okinawa D+30. At the end of the war he served in Korea and later in Japan.

Returning to Cincinnati after the War, Dr. Helmsworth began performing cardiac surgery at Children's Hospital. One of the highlights and great contributions of Dr. Helmsworth's career occurred in 1951. Working with cardiologist Samuel Kaplan, MD, and chemist Leland Clark, PhD, the team developed the world's first functional heart-lung machine, located at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. One of the original prototypes is located in the Winkler Center.
