Scope and Content

The Samuel Nickles collection occupies 1.5 linear feet and consists of 2 boxes. The collection is broken down in 3 series: Personal Memorabilia, Writings of Samuel Nickles, and Medical College of Ohio. The bulk of the collection emanates from Nickles' career as a faculty member of the Medical College of Ohio. The personal memorabilia series includes memorial articles written about Dr. Nickles, including a folder on the article "Samuel Nickles, Dry and Quaint: A Landmark of Western Medicine" by Katherine T. Barkley, and an extensive collection of publications and newsclippings from and about the Deutscher Literarischer Klub von Cincinnati (German Literary Club of Cincinnati).

Biography of Samuel Nickles

Dr. Samuel Nickles was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on August 8th, 1833. In 1862, he served on the 81st Ohio Reserve Militia as a surgeon despite his lack of formal qualifications. Nickles graduated from The Medical College of Ohio in 186, and joined as a member of the faculty soon after. He also had a large practice in Cincinnati, and was very popular among the German residents. He even joined the German Literary Club of Cincinnati and was a member for many years. Nickles also served as the examiner for The Home Life Insurance Company from Brooklyn New York, and was a member of the Cincinnati Academy of Medicine, serving as its president in 1885. Nickles died on April 21st, 1908, after a severe case of influenza.
